Not sure about Lew Rockwell's optimism
I've posted before about how sane I think Lew Rockwell is. But in this instance I'm not so sure he is right. He quotes a speech made by George Bush in which Bush actually states a lot of truth about free markets and free enterprise. Lew sees this as a sign that the Republicans are getting back on track. I have a nasty suspicion about it.
Consider; Bush is the most widely detested US president that I can think of worldwide. He has trashed civil liberties and spat on the Constitution. He has brought about war where war was not only unnecessary but where it looks like his friends made great profits from it. He has done all these things and more by telling the most outrageous lies. He is considered a liar and now he speaks truth. I think this is damaging to truth. A liar is someone not to be trusted. For a liar to speak truth invalidates that truth in the eyes of those who might otherwise consider it. I don't think what I say here is widely unknown. I think it likely that those who pull George's strings know it too and want free markets and less government invalidated as good ideas. And the best way to do that is to have Honest George make a speech in praise of freedom.
